Replacing a Missing Filling

Posted .

It’s not unheard-of for an old or large filling to fall out as a result of the ravages of time and the pervasive nature of the bacteria in your mouth compromising the cement. This can be a serious cause for concern. It could compromise the full function of your mouth, mar your smile, and even cause pain or infection. In a situation like this, Dr. David Duke may recommend that you have the enamel layer of the tooth restored by installing a crown.

A crown effectively restores a tooth by replacing the enamel layer with an artificial material that is not subject to tooth decay. At Dental Designs of Bountiful, we utilize E4D technology to create crown restorations in a single day.

The dentist starts by examining the tooth, to assess the extent of the decay and to make sure the interior structures of the tooth are healthy. If the tooth decay penetrates deep into the pulp or root of the tooth the dentist might need to perform a root canal to replace the decayed strctures.

Then your dentist will then use a drill to remove the majority of the enamel layer, leaving just enough to surround the dentin layer of the tooth. This is called an abutment, and it will anchor your new crown. The crown is made right in our office, which means you walk out the same day with a new permanent restoration.
